Highland crossroads

Found on the southern shores of Loch Shin, Lairg serves as a Highland crossroads where tourists visiting this part of the country will likely end up at some point during their trip. That’s one of the reasons it has plenty of places to eat, drink and shop.

On your way to Lairg you will pass the Falls of Shin. Not only is this a pretty place to go for a walk, it is also one of the best places around to see salmon jump in an attempt to pass up the falls during Summer. Furthermore, Lairg hosts the biggest one-day livestock market in Europe every August. It’s a lamb sale where sheep from all over northern Scotland are bought and sold.

Our favorite spots:

Eat & drink

Walk along the lovely loch at the edge of town and have lunch at The Pier Cafe, a great loch side spot putting up tasty dishes. They also sell some unique souvenirs onsite.

Interested in purchasing a high quality tweed outfit? Then Lairg is the place to go, as it is home to The Sutherland Sporting Tweed Company, a family run business on the High Street, specializing in tweed, wool, outdoor clothing and accessories.
